Michelangelo Frammatino’s celebrated, mesmerizing, characteristically uncategorizable film unfolds in four seamlessly connected parts as referenced by the four “turns” of the title. The first part focuses on the human realm, telling the story of an aging goatherd, before the next three each bring different non-human entities to the fore: a goat (animal), a fir tree (vegetable) and the charcoal produced from its wood (mineral). A meticulously constructed fiction whose lengthy shots and almost total wordlessness evoke the feeling of an observational documentary, LE QUATTRO VOLTE marked the start of a renewed interest in foregrounding the non-human on the big screen.
